Is CSI: Teaching Criminals to Be Better At Hiding Crimes

I recently read an article that says studies are showing that high tech crime shows like CSI: and its two spin-off shows are teaching criminals to be better at cleaning up scenes and hiding evidence. Essentially teaching them to be better at commiting crimes.

I thought that might be a valid point and continued to read the article to see what criminals have been doing. What have the low lifes of society changed to raise the bar?

I then got the to best part of the article and the reason why I am writing this posting. Below is a slice of the article and see if you can pick out the part I am talking about:

"A man charged in a recent double homicide in northeastern Ohio was a "CSI" fan and went to great lengths to cover his tracks, according to an affidavit filed by Trumbull County prosecutors.

Jermaine "Maniac" McKinney, 25, allegedly broke into a house, killed a mother and daughter and used bleach to remove blood from his hands, prosecutors said. He also allegedly covered the interior of a getaway car with blankets to avoid transferring blood.

Prosecutors said McKinney burned the bodies and his clothing and removed his cigarette butts — which would contain his DNA — from the crime scene.

According to the affidavit, he also tried to throw some evidence into a lake, including a crowbar used to bludgeon one of the victims. The lake was frozen, though, and the crowbar remained on the surface.

Investigators later recovered the evidence. McKinney, who was indicted this month on two counts of aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and other charges, could face the death penalty if convicted."

OK, I am not sure that you picked out the part that really sets this genius apart from other, less educated, criminals. He watches CSI: and thinks he has it all figured. But what went wrong?

Let me highlight the area of the article that I think shows this man's true understanding of science and technology that he has gained from watching hours of investigative drama on TV.

"he also tried to throw some evidence into a lake, including a crowbar used to bludgeon one of the victims. The lake was frozen, though, and the crowbar remained on the surface."

To review, with all of this man's science expertise, he seemed to over look one important detail your honour, that water freezes when the temperature drops below 0 degrees. And I believe your honour, that no matter how much TV someone watches, criminals with always be dumb. No further questions.

This guy burns everything, cleans up everything, and then goes to the bridge, doesn't have the sense to look down, and throws the crow bar on the frozen river, making it very easy to find. I thought this article had some merit. I thought maybe it could have a point, that yes, criminals are learning a few things, but then they left in the part about the guy being an idiot.

I think this guy was screwed whether he watched CSI: or Sesame Street. Then again is he just watched "Bill Nye the Science Guy" more often things could have gone way better.

I miss Bill Nye... that show was great! My favorite was the little video they'd have using popular songs but change the words to scientific education. Very sneaky...
